The Surgery The surgery itself will take less than 30 minutes. It is painless and for the most part should be conducted without anxiety on the part of the patient. The patient will be placed either in a reclining surgical chair or on a surgical table. Drops of anesthtic will be placed in both eyes, numbing any pain. The eyes will then be flushed and the area of your face around the eyes will be cleaned. An instrument called a lid speculum will be placed on the eyes to keep them open. To create suction on the cornea, rings will be placed on the eyes at very high pressures. There may be slight discomfort and dimming of the vision as these high-pressure rings are attache to the eyes. An instrument for cutting called a microkeratome will be placed on the eyes. This tool is used to make a small incision in the cornea. As the surgery begins, the patient will be asked to stare straight ahead a small blinking light. This is to keep the eye focused and positioned with the eyes centered. The doctor will use the micorkeratone to cut a small flap in the cornea. At this time, the corneal rings and microkeratone will be removed. The patient will be able to see, however, as the flap in the cornea has been made and the eye is held open with the lid speculum, vision will be blurry. As the patient. continue to stare at the light, the doctor will begin using the excimer laser to shape the eye. The doctor will either smooth areas that are too curved or simply changing the overall curve of the cornea. This will help the eye to naturally focus light without the aid of contact lenses or spectacles. The laser is used in short bursts, and the entire surgery itself of the reshaping of the eye takes minutes. After the eye has been reshaped, the doctor will place the corneal flap he cut back on the eye, thus protecting the eye and helping it to heal. The area around the eye will be cleaned, and the patient will be able to leave after about 2 hours of post-surgery recuperation.
