Lasik Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does the surgery usually take?

A: The surgery will usually go no longer than 30 minutes. However, it is important to remember that you must abstain from makeup and contacts for a certain period of time before the surgery and sports for a certain time afterward.

Q: What visual problems will LASIK remedy?

A: LASIK surgery will remedy a variety of vision problems, but the three most common corrections made are to patients who suffer from myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatistm.

Q: What visual problems are not treatable with LASIK?

A: Only vision problems regarding refraction in the cornea and lens are cured with LASIK. The exception to that is presbyopia, which cannot be corrected as it is a part of the natural aging process.

Q:What are some alternatives to LASIK surgery?

A: Thermokeratoplasty, Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), and Radial Keratotomy (RK or Radial K) are all surgeries which attempt to correct refractive errors in the eye. However, none are as safe or have as a high a success rate as LASIK.

Q: What are the chances that surgery might worsen vision?

A: Studies indicate that only 3-4% of patients who undergo the surgery have minor loss of vision, and less than 1% experience major vision loss.

Q: Is the LASIK procedure painful?

A: While there may slight discomfort, since the patient's eyes must be held open and the head still, there is no actual pain ever found in the surgery itself.

Q: How long can a full recovery be expected to take?

A: A full recovery is most often guaranteed after eight weeks. However, it may be sooner than that. It is important to follow your doctor's directions and visit her or him often to make the recovery even faster.

Q: Are multiple surgeries possible for progressively worsening vision?

A: It is possible to receive multiple surgeries, but it is important to remember that if your vision needs constant repair, your eyes are changing and you probably would not have been a candidate for surgery to begin with. Also, just because you were eligible for surgery at one point, just because your vision fails after surgery it does not mean you are eligible again.

Q: How can I be sure the doctor I have chosen will perform the surgery well?

A: Being open with your doctor and making him aware of your fears will alert him to the fact that you are uncomfortable. Your doctor can explain to you in medical terms everything that is going on. If you still aren't reassured, get a second opinion from another doctor. Remember, LASIK surgery is growing in popularity all over the country, and more and more doctors are being trained to perform it every day.
